Metro rolls to district softball titles

Sunnyvale league turns out champions in all three divisions

    By Dick Sparrer

For a softball team to score 96 runs in four games is pretty impressive.

But for a softball team to score 96 runs in four games shortened to four innings each by the 10-run rule... well, that's downright incredible.

It's just that incredible performance, though, that the Sunnyvale Metro Little League 9-10 all-star softball team managed. And it resulted in a District 44 championship and pretty awesome start to the Section 5 tournament.

Metro whipped Sunnyvale National 11-1 in the finals of the elimination bracket, crushed Sunnyvale Southern 20-5, and then blasted Southern 26-2 in the district championship game.

Metro came back three days later to open the sectionals with a lopsided 39-13 win over Dublin of District 57.

Monica Boardman was the winning pitcher and the leading hitter in Metro's 26-2 victory in the district finals. Boardman gave up just three hits and struck out 12 over four innings to lead Metro to the win. She also tripled, doubled and singled twice, driving in four runs and scoring three.

But Boardman wasn't the only hitting star for Metro in the championship game. Rebecca Bliss had two doubles and two singles to knock in four runs; Camille Santos was 4-for-4 with two doubles to plate five runs; and Jill Anderson had four hits and stole four bases. Breanna Salazar also doubled in the win.

Olivia Hartoon, Kristen Werling and Jamie Mangan each singled for Southern.

Metro came back with the devastating 39-12 win over Dublin in the section opener. Boardman was once again the offensive star with a grand slam and three singles, driving in five runs.

Anderson tossed a no-hitter in the four-inning win, striking out seven along the way, and she was also 4-for-4 with two doubles and a triple to drive in four runs. She stole five bases and scored five runs.

Sara Cardosi hit for the cycle for Metro with a single, double, triple and home run to drive in seven runs. She had six steals and scored five runs.

Bliss homered and singled twice in the win.

Metro earned a place in the title round of the district tournament with the 11-1 win over Sunnyvale National in the finals of the elimination bracket. Boardman allowed just a hit and struck out six over four innings to get the win. She also ripped a triple.

Bliss singled and doubled, Cardosi and Kaneesha Johnson each doubled and Salazar tripled for Metro.

Amelia Manzano doubled in the game for National.

Metro came back with the 20-5 win over Southern to set up the ultimate championship.

Anderson tossed a three-hitter for the win and Bliss tripled and singled twice. Salazar had two hits and Lindsey Poole doubled.

Hartoon singled and tripled to knock in three runs for Southern.

Southern had opened the tourney with a hard-earned 20-19 win over Metro. Werling was the winning pitcher and Hartoon singled and tripled. Pauline Slakey had two hits, Alexa Wallin walked six times and Monica Markart walked five times.

Cardosi tripled, doubled and singled twice for Metro and Johnson had two hits. Anderson and Bliss each tripled.

    Junior all-stars

Sunnyvale Southern-Metro took both ends of a July 14 double header over Sunnyvale National to win a berth in the junior division (ages 13-14) sectional tournament.

Lindsey Dow tossed a no-hitter to lead Southern-Metro to an 8-0 win over National in the first game. She struck out 13 and walked just four, facing only 26 batters in the game.
