Perish the thought of decreased rates

I got a bit of a chuckle out of reading Sunnyvale Director of Finance Mary Bradley's comments [Sun, July 19] regarding the City Council's approval of yet another utility rate hike--this time in the form of an increase in the city 'electricity usage tax', up from 2 percent to 2.33 percent.

I guess Bradley and the City Council have a problem with residents actually paying LESS for electricity for once. Wasn't that what the State of California had in mind when they passed deregulation?

As Hindin's article reports, "Bradley adamantly emphasized, once the 10 percent decrease in rates and .33 percent increase in tax rates are figured together, residents will actually pay roughly the same amount for their electricity that they previously paid."

    Gee, isn't that wonderful.

Yes, I do know about voters approving this tax increase three years ago (Guess how I voted).

I must say though, I'm sure glad Bradley and the Sunnyvale City Council are making absolutely sure that apparently we won't ever get a chance to actually enjoy a decrease in our total utility bill, heaven forbid.

    Perish the thought.
