The Country Gourmet & Co. has been a local fixture in Sunnyvale for the last 13 years. The restaurant moved to its present location from Mountain View more than a decade ago, after the owners found an appealing local spot, according to Wendy Ford, general manager of Country Gourmet. "It was a nice space," she said.

Since then, the restaurant has carved a niche for itself in its Mary Avenue and El Camino Real neighborhood. "We have a lot of regular customers," Ford said. "You develop a rapport with them."

Country Gourmet prides itself on serving food that tastes like home cooking. Chefs at the restaurant bake and prepare all the meals from scratch. None of the food is purchased from or pre-prepared by other companies, according to Ford. "We serve healthy, nutritious food. We make everything in-house," she said. "It's the kind of food you would prepare for yourself."

On Saturday and Sunday, Country Gourmet offers a weekend brunch. The brunch menu includes a variety of egg dishes, from the Mexicali scramble to cheese and spinach omelets. The Country Gourmet offers such breakfast temptations as Spinach Benedict, Bill's Breakfast (eggs, potatoes, buttermilk biscuit and toast), and Ellie's Breakfast, similar to Bill's but with fresh fruit.

Prices during brunch and breakfast range from $2.60 for fresh fruit to $7.25 for Spinach Benedict.

On the dinner menu, the usual tossed green and Caesar salads are joined by almond chicken salad, smoked chicken salad and Mexican salad. Salads come in under $9, with the most expensive being the Caesar salad with grilled chicken ($8.45).

Specialties include a variety of burgers, spicy chicken burritos, a country gourmet stir-fry and garlic prawns with angel hair pasta. Most of the specialties are around $7.50.

Sandwiches range from a turkey pesto to the California Coast, a concoction that includes avocado and sautéed mushrooms. Sandwich prices range from $6.15 to $7.25.

Country Gourmet is in Sunnyvale at 1314 S. Mary Ave., near El Camino Real. It is open Mon.-Fri., 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Weekend hours are Sat., 8 a.m.-9 p.m., and Sun., 8 a.m.-8:30 p.m. For more information call 733-9446.
