Sunnyvale man sentenced to 17 years

Quintero arrested with $1.7 million worth of crystal methamphetamine

By KATHERINE PETERSEN

A Sunnyvale man found with 12 pounds of methamphetamine was sentenced to 17 years in prison July 22 for attempted drug sales, according to a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's San Jose office.

Federal Judge Ronald M. Whyte sentenced 29-year-old Feliciano Quintero Carranza to the lengthy term because of the amount and purity of the drug found in his possession, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeff Nedrow.

"The thing that's unusual in this case is that the methamphetamine was 100 percent pure," Nedrow said.

When cut for street sale, the methamphetamine could have produced more than 86,000 individual doses with street value of $1.7 million, Nedrow said. The drugs were found in the trunk of Carranza's car, which was parked in a Sunnyvale storage locker, he said.

Carranza, also known as Alfredo Godines, will be ineligible for parole until he has served 14 years, Nedrow said.

Carranza is one of eight defendants convicted in the past year as the result of a Drug Enforcement Agency methamphetamine crackdown in the South Bay in 1994 and 1995.
