    Metro claims softball titles

Kellie Wheatley had two hits and scored two runs and was also the winning pitcher to lead the Sunnyvale Metro all-stars to a 4-2 win over Sunnyvale National in the championship game of the District 44 major division softball tournament.

Wheatley singled and doubled to lead the offense, and she also struck out six and walked just one in pitching her club to the championship win.

Run-scoring singles by Dominique Costello and Audrey Gallien helped Metro to the important win. Allyson Lang walked and scored a run, and Gallien singled and scored the tiebreaking run in the fourth.

National had tied the game in the top of the fourth. After Sarah Nakamoto singled and scored a run in the third, Rochelle Hamilton singled and scored on a single by Veronica Mepa in the fourth.

But Metro clinched the win with a run in bottom of the fourth, then added an insurance marker in the fifth.

Kayla Farrell had tossed a three-hitter in a 16-3 win over Sunnyvale Southern to push Metro into the finals.

Costello led the offense with a triple and two singles to drive in three runs. Lang plated three runs with a single, double and triple. Wheatley, Gallien and Cynthia Beebe added two hits each.

Jennifer Sparks and Colleen Powers each doubled for Southern.

Southern lost 7-4 to National a game later to face elimination.

Metro opened the tournament with a 7-1 win over Sunnyvale National. Wheatley tossed a three-hitter for the win, striking out eight.

Lang doubled twice and singled, and Costello and Kristin Wheatley each singled and doubled in the win. Ke. Wheatley, Gallien, Beebe and Jackie DesJardin also had hits for Metro.
