Phoenix cop named to head Public Safety

    By Kelly Wilkinson

Irwin Bakin, assistant police chief of the Phoenix, Arizona police department, will take over as director of Sunnyvale's Public Safety Department no later than October 1. City manager Robert LaSala made the announcement last Friday.

Bakin will succeed Regan Williams, who announced his retirement in February on the heels of a no confidence union vote. Brown Taylor, former Los Altos police chief, has been serving as the interim director.

LaSala conducted a nationwide search for the director's position and received 40 applications. LaSala made site visits to two of the candidates, which LaSala said "verified what we learned through the interview process. It provided additional information used to determine how well the candidate would compliment our public safety program, the city management team, the City Council, and most importantly, our citizens."

Bakin has served in the executive level position of the assistant chief since 1991. Out of his 29 years of law enforcement experience, 17 years have been at the senior and executive levels.
