Terminally ill man shoots sick brother, then shoots himself
Two brothers who were found dead of gunshot wounds in a room at the Idylwood Care Center on July 23, are the victims of what police are calling a tragic murder-suicide.
"The one brother cared deeply for the other," said Captain Chuck Eaneff of the Sunnyvale Public Safety Department. "At the point where they were both terminally ill and in pain, they decided to end it."
Late Friday morning, Robert Allen, 73, visited his brother John, 76, at Idylwood Care Center, where John was a resident. Robert was in the habit of visiting daily, according to Eaneff. That Friday, Robert brought a gun with him, shooting his brother first, and then himself.
A staff member whom police would not identify came to check on John Allen and found both bodies, according to Eaneff.
Robert died at 12:04 p.m., according to the Santa Clara County office of the medical examiner. John did not die instantaneously, but was pronounced dead at Stanford Medical Center at 3:53 p.m., according to the coroner's office.
"It's really a tragedy. It wasn't a case of domestic violence or arguing," Eaneff said. "All evidence at this point shows that it was a murder suicide, but it wasn't a malicious murder.
The brother who was in the convalescent home was physically unable to commit suicide for himself."
Sheriff's office on the hunt for escaped man
The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office is looking for a Sunnyvale man--convicted of assault and battery--who escaped from the Elmwood Facility on July 9.
Uver Alexander Trigueros, 24, was scheduled to be transferred to San Quentin the day he was discovered missing, said Sgt. John Hirokawa, Sheriff's spokesman.
Trigueros is described as a Hispanic male, 5 foot 4, 160 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He also uses the name of Alexander Garcia Cornejo.
Sheriff's deputies arrested Trigueros for driving under the influence of alcohol, Hirokawa said.
The San Jose Police Department had a warrant out for his arrest. He was to begin a five-year sentence in state prison for assault with a deadly weapon.
Officials have yet to determine how Trigueros escaped. Bail in the escape case is set at $100,000.
Anyone with information is asked to call 299-2211, or 299-2674 after 5 p.m.
Filing deadline for council candidates approaches
Residents wishing to run for the City Council race in November must file their paperwork by Aug. 6. Candidacy papers can be obtained through the city clerk's office in City Hall at 465 West Olive St.
Councilman Stan Kawczynski's seat will be vacated because of term limits, and two candidates have already announced their intention to run. Frances Rowe has already filed the required paperwork, and Tim Risch has also announced his campaign.
Three earn high Eagle rank
Sunnyvale's Boy Scout Troop 488 members Tom Chien, Gene Pai and Hank Wang received the rank of Eagle Scout at the troop's First National Court of Honor on Saturday, July 24, at West Valley College in Saratoga.
All three Scouts successfully implemented their individual projects at the Santa Clara County's Society for Crippled Children, Camp Costanoan. Pai reconstructed a curved L-shaped wooden bench in the compound for children with special abilities. Wang's project involved the construction of a concrete pavement for wheel-chair access. Chien constructed a two-foot high wooden fence around a flowerbed.
