Community day centers combine senior services
For the first time ever, Cupertino and Sunnyvale senior day services are combining their programs for a special Week of Sharing, from Aug. 9 through 13.
Suzie Hiatt, Cupertino's program director said: "We thought it would be a great opportunity for the seniors to get a chance to meet more people like themselves, because they are isolated."
Each year, the Sunnyvale Senior Day Services program, located at St. Luke's Church, moves to the Cupertino program's site for a week while the church uses the room for a Bible study.
"They historically stay in one room in our church [St. Jude's Church], but this year we are trying something new to combine both centers," Hiatt said.
The staffs from both sites are planning a week of activities, including live entertainment, an ice cream social and an antique car show.
Organizers decided to hold an antique car show to appeal to the men in their programs.
To fund the activities during the Week of Sharing, Cupertino Senior Day Services is holding a fundraiser from 5 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 30 at the Fresh Choice in Vallco Fashion Park. For every Fresh Choice diner who brings in a flier from Cupertino Senior Day Services, the center will get 20 percent of the pre-tax proceeds.
"We're hoping to raise about $300 from the fundraiser," Ferm said. "To do that we need approximately 100 to 120 individuals purchasing dinner and a drink."
Fliers for the Fresh Choice fundraiser are available at Cupertino Senior Day Services at St. Jude Church, 20920 McClellan Road, and at the Sunnyvale site at St. Luke Church, 1020 The Dalles Ave.
