Metro wins district, section softball titles

It's not much of a spot for a summer vacation.

It's on the way to Lake Tahoe, but it's not quite Tahoe. And it's just past Sacramento, but it's not even Sacramento.

It's Auburn, a small town in the Sierra foothills, and there's not a whole heckuva lot to do there.

But the girls of the Sunnyvale Metro Little League are heading there this summer nonetheless, and they're looking forward to the trip.

The Metro major, and senior-division all-star teams have won berths in the Division II tournament after winning district and sectional titles.

The senior all-stars, a team made up of players from the Sunnyvale Metro and Southern Little Leagues, were unopposed in the sectional tournament after winning the District 44 title.

The Metro majors, however, had to battle through the loser's bracket to win the Section 5 title last week, beating Gilroy twice to claim the championship.

Metro lost its opener 2-0 to Dublin to slip into the loser's bracket. Dublin took advantage of a couple of walks and infield singles to score its two runs.

Kim Glass tossed a four-hitter, striking out nine and walking just three, but was pinned with the tough loss. Only one of the four hits left the infield. Glass and Krista Droze each had hits for Metro.

The loss seemed to get Metro going. The Sunnyvale girls pounded San Jose Spartan 15-5 behind a five-hit performance by Droze, who doubled, tripled and singled three times.

Dow went the distance to toss a three-hitter, striking out nine, to get the win.

Metro gained a measure of revenge a game later with a 6-2 win over Dublin. Glass led the locals with two hits and Allie Torres, Wheatley, Dow, Droze and Hayes had one each. Glass was the winning pitcher, tossing a four-hitter and fanning nine.

Metro had to beat Gilroy twice to claim the title, and that's just what the Sunnyvale girls did. They won 12-9, then backed that up with a convincing 21-7 victory.
