Locals celebrate World Breastfeeding Week
By Melissa Matchak
In support of a worldwide effort to encourage women to breastfeed their babies, La Leche League International's Sunnyvale group will celebrate the 11th annual World Breastfeeding Week on Aug. 11 at Westgate Mall in San Jose. Activities will include a walk-a-thon, silent auction and prize drawing. The walk will begin at 11 a.m. with registration at 10 a.m. Winners of the silent auction and prize drawing will be announced at 3:30 p.m.
La Leche League International, a nonprofit organization, offers support, encouragement and information to women who want to breastfeed their babies. The organization also provides continuing education to doctors and nurses and is a founding member of the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, which works to promote breastfeeding's importance worldwide.
La Leche League argues that breastfeeding's advantages extend beyond the many health benefits to mother and child, including saving money on health care and helping to protect the environment.
World Breastfeeding Week is held each year to commemorate the August 1990 signing of the Innocent Declaration, which describes how governments and medical institutions can help promote breastfeeding.
