County trust helps provide housing
The Santa Clara County Housing Trust provides assistance to the homeless and to first-time homebuyers, as well as renters. It recently became the only housing trust to provide this assistance without the use of taxes. The trust has raised $20 million in the last two years, and the city of Sunnyvale has contributed $500,000. The $20.2 million raised from both public and private sources will assist at least 5,000 families throughout Santa Clara County. Money is greatly needed, as Santa Clara County is the fifth least affordable county in the nation after Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo and Massachusetts' Nantucket, according to the National Low Income Housing Fund.
Special Olympics seeks volunteers
The Special Olympics fall sports season is about to start, and enthusiastic, energetic people with a good sense of humor are needed to help as coaches to teach 12 different sports for the year-round program.
The next new volunteer orientation is Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Old Almaden Winery. Practices for volleyball, soccer, bowling, cycling and long-distance running begin soon at locations throughout the Silicon Valley. No experience is necessary to coach. Volunteers must be ages 16 and older, or accompanied by an adult.
