Police probe shooting of armed man

Officials say knife-wielding man advanced on unnamed officers

Sunnyvale police are investigating the shooting death by an officer of a man outside his home Saturday, according to a Department of Public Safety spokesman.

Tomas Carolan, who was in his early 50s and lived with his elderly mother, was shot four times. Police said he advanced toward two officers while brandishing a kitchen knife. He was transported to Santa Clara Medical Center, where he later died.

Police said they received a 911 hang-up call about 6:30 p.m. and that officers responded to the Pome Avenue home.

While the two officers were talking to Carolan's mother in a patio area, her son came outside and began acting threateningly, police said.

Police said they ordered the man to stop, but he kept advancing toward them. When he got within a few feet and pulled out a knife, one officer fired at him, according to a police report.

Details regarding Carolan's criminal history and further information on the case were not available at press time.

Police officials placed both officers on paid administrative leave pending further investigation. Police officials declined to release the names of the officers.

The incident is the first officer-involved fatal shooting in more than two years.
