Perry drives National to win in section title game
It sure was hot in Roseville last week.
So that was the perfect place for the Sunnyvale National Little League junior division all-stars. Because they're pretty hot themselves!
Sunnyvale rolled to a championship in the Section 5 tournament, winning four straight games, including a tight 3-2 win over Milpitas South in the finals.
Sunnyvale National had won the District 44 championship to qualify for the sectionals. By winning the Section 5 title, Sunnyvale advanced to the regional tournament in Roseville that opened Aug. 1.
Milpitas South, a 4-3 winner over Lincoln Glen in the tourney semifinals, gave National a battle right to the final frame before losing by a run in the sectional finals.
Jimmy Moore singled to left and raced home on a double by Robert Perry to snap a 2-2 tie in the seventh and give National a 3-2 lead in the championship game.
Milpitas threatened in the home half of the seventh with a couple of baserunners, but Perry put down the side without giving up a run to clinch the win and the title.
Perry was the winning pitcher and also drove in all three runs with a double and inside-the-park home run for Sunnyvale. Troy Tulowitzki and Bo Caravalho had two hits apiece for National.
Sunnyvale took a 2-0 lead in the third when Moore reached on an error, stole second and scored ahead of Perry on the home run.
Milpitas came back to tie it, but Sunnvyale broke the tie in the seventh to clinch the win.
