Metro all-stars win District 44 softball titles
The Sunnyvale Metro Little League cruised to District 44 titles in the girls' major (ages 11-12) and senior (14-15) softball divisions.
Meghan Richmond flipped a pair of shutouts to lead Metro to two wins over Gilroy to lead Sunnyvale to the senior title.
Richmond fanned six and tossed a one-hit shutout in Sunnyvale 12-0 win over Gilroy in the tourney opener for each club. Sheila Feldman had two hits in the win.
Richmond came back with another shutout in Sunnyvale's 4-0 win over Gilroy in the finals.
In between, Sunnyvale ripped Dublin 8-3 behind Feldman, who struck out eight and allowed just one earned run.
Stephanie Cruz led the bat attack with three hits and three runs scored. Christina Puentes singled and doubled to drive in two runs, and Feldman and Andra Feldman had two hits apiece.
In the major division tourney, Jennifer Juanes hurled a one-hit shutout in the finals to lead Sunnyvale Metro to a convincing 8-0 win over Dublin.
Metro had opened the tourney with a 13-1 win over Gilroy on a no-hitter by Juanes.
Jessica Moore whirled a no-hitter for Sunnyvale in a 12-0 win over Spartan a day later. Moore helped her cause with a single and two walks to score three runs in the win.
Meghan Jost doubled for Metro and Nicole White singled and walked twice.
In other softball action, the Metro 9-10 all-stars opened the district tournament with a split, losing 15-9 to Sunnyvale National before beating Mountain View-Los Altos 15-13.
Kellie Wheatley and Allyson Lang, returning players from the Sunnyvale 9-10 team that won the district and sectional titles a year ago, teamed for some nifty defense in the final inning against Mountain View-Los Altos.
Lang, the club's catcher, gunned down an enemy baserunner in the final inning with Wheatley, the shortstop, putting on the tag.
First sacker Kayla Farrell hauled in a pop for the second out before the next MV-LA hitter walked to bring the potential tying run to the plate.
But Wheatley fielded a hard-hit ground ball at short and flipped to Mikayla Martinez at second for the final out to clinch the win.
Gabby Liu was the winning pitcher for Metro.
Cynthia Beebe, Melissa Anderson, Jennifer Drago, Molly Leemhuis, Tiffany Yang, Jackie Desjardin, Audrey Gallien and Jessica Borgman were other members of the team coached by Steve Farrell, Chip Wheatley and Tony Phillips.
