Fluoridation plan controversy
Sunnyvale's City Council voted last week to place a special measure on the November 7 ballot. The measure, if passed, would approve the fluoridation of Sunnyvale's water that the city gets from San Francisco. Many members of the public spoke in opposition to this resolution. They asserted that putting fluoride in the water would be extremely detrimental to Sunnyvale citizens' health. One speaker, attorney Gary B. Wesley of San Jose, has threatened to sue the six city council members who were present at the meeting, as well as the city attorney. He holds them all in violation of the Brown Act, California's government open meeting law. Wesley claims the council barred discussion of the fluoridation plan before approving the measure to add it to the November ballot.
Because of the overwhelming protest over the fluoridation issue, the council added an amendment to the resolution calling for a public forum at an unspecified date before November 7.
Spend a night with the Giants
The Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a "Sunnyvale Night With the San Jose Giants" on Aug. 18. Five thousand seats have been reserved for Sunnyvale residents at that evening's minor league baseball game. There will be a barbecue prior to the game, and Sunnyvale's Chairman of the Board of Directors Pat Castillo will throw out the first pitch. Tickets are available to city residents on a first-come, first-serve basis. Residents can either stop by the Chamber of Commerce, or call 408.736.4971 to get their tickets. Tickets are being given at a limit of eight or fewer per group.
Resident completes Postal Training Program
Sunnyvale resident Sylvia Peacock successfully completed a 16-week Postal Service Associate Supervisor program and has been placed in an associate supervisory role with the San Francisco postal district.
Peacock, a former letter carrier with the Los Altos Post Office, was one of 28 candidates to complete the course. She joins her fellow graduates for assignments at district postal facility. The San Francisco District encompasses post offices and mail processing plants from Sunnyvale to the Oregon border.
