Statewide nod to youth program
Sunnyvale's Youth@Work program received an excellence award from the League of California Cities in their youth development category for 1999. The Helen Putnam Award is given annually to cities for outstanding achievement and innovation.
Youth@Work introduces youth to the working world through an on-line service that links youth with employers throughout the Bay Area. Through the program, participants learn about career options, education, training, and other career resources. Since its 1996 inception, the program has linked over 4,000 kids with employers and job resources.
The North Valley Private Industry Council spearheaded the development of the Youth@Work program, and Sunnyvale is responsible for its administration.

Sunnyvale native chosen as Clash intern
Steve Kuclinca, a native of Sunnyvale, was recently accepted as an intern for the San Jose Clash, San Jose's Major League Soccer team.
Interns for the Clash perform a wide variety of functions, including marketing, community outreach and promotions. "We want our interns to be as excited about the Clash as we are. We want them to leave here with first-hand knowledge in sports management and sports marketing," said General Manager Lynne Meterparel. "This program provides our interns with the opportunity to be part of a first-class professional soccer league in America."
Currently, Clash has 27 interns. The internship program was put in place in April 1996. Former Clash interns have gone on to work with other Major League Soccer (MLS) groups and other major league sports companies in the Bay Area, or have stayed with Clash.
According to Kuclinca, who joined the Clash in March, he assists in areas such as crowd building, research and data entry.
"I wanted to work in the sports industry and this is a great way to start," Kuclinca said. "It's a newer league, and it's a great way to learn from the bottom up to the top. With the 49ers or the Giants, it's like a corporation. This is like a start-up. It's exciting."
Kuclinca graduated from Pinewood High School in 1990, going on to receive a degree in Political Science and Public Service and a minor in Spanish from the University of California at Davis in 1994. He received a master's degree in Spanish at Texas Tech University in 1996.
