Metro girls take softball titles
Metro-Southern seniors advance to Western Regionals

It's been quite a summer for the Sunnyvale Metro Little League.
Metro boasts four District 44 championships, and two teams have gone on to win additional titles.
Metro teams won District 44 titles in boys major-division baseball, girls major-division softball, girls 9-10 age-division softball and girls senior softball.
The girls major-division softball all-stars went on to win the Section 5 crown, and the senior softball 'stars won Division II and a berth in the Western Regional Tournament in Boise, Idaho.
Senior champions
The Metro Little League combined with the Sunnyvale Southern Little League to field a team for post-season all-star play, and the girls rolled through district and sectional play to finish first in the divisional in Auburn.
Members of the team include Kristina Hayes, Caterina Wynkoop, Alexandra Feldman, Sheila Feldman, Robin Glass, Cristina Puentes, Raya Clor, Rachel Fabet, Ginger George, Renee George, Katie Henderson, Allison McCann, Sarah Mullen and Andrea Watson. The manager of the club is John Van Pelt.
Metro-Southern opened the Western Regionals with a 4-0 victory over Arizona, but then lost two straight, to Oregon 7-3 and Southern California 8-1.
Metro-Southern won the District 44 title with two straight victories over Sunnyvale National.
The club had no opposition at the sectional, so advanced directly to the divisional tournament in Auburn.
The hitting of Hayes, Puentes and A. Feldman and the pitching of S. Feldman helped Metro-Southern open the divisional with a 3-2 win over Oak Park.
Metro-Southern made it two straight with a 6-2 win over East County. S. Feldman flipped a six-hitter, striking out seven and walking just one. Glass singled and doubled in the win.
S. Feldman tossed Metro-Southern to a 5-1 win over East County with a four-hitter a game later. Glass singled and doubled again and Puentes ripped a double. Members of the Sunnyvale National senior all-star team were Angela Abina, Sabrina Barton, Allegra Bajkowski, Karlee Belcastro, Jenna Broker, Jessica Clyno, Cecilia Diaz, Tiffany Jordan, Cassie Padfield, Nicole Rivas and Angelina Vargas.
Major division
Kim Glass was the winning pitcher for Sunnyvale Metro in the District 44 major-division softball championship game.
Metro turned back Los Altos-Mountain View 19-9 to win the district championship.
Members of the championship Metro team included Jenna Arruda, Cynthia Beebe, Dominique Costello, Danielle Denatale, Lindsey Dow, Krista Droze, Glass, Stephanie Hayes, Kristen Kidwell, Allyson Lang, Gabby Liu, Alicia Torres and Kellie Wheatley.
Metro followed the district championship with a sectional title, then finished third in the divisional tournament.
Metro lost 3-0 to Oak Park in its divisional opener despite a solid pitching performance by Glass.
Costello doubled in the game and Droze singled.
Metro battled back to edge Red Bluff 7-6 in seven innings. Droze, who had singled and scored on a single by Torres to tie the game in the sixth, singled home two runs in the seventh to lead Metro to the win.
Pinole-Hercules nipped Metro 1-0 in seven to drop the locals out of the tournament. Droze had the only hit for Metro. Glass was tagged with the tough pitching loss despite giving up just the one run.
Droze led all Sunnyvale hitters in the post-season with 17 hits. Torres had 13, Wheatley ripped 12 and Glass cracked 11.
9-10 age division
Jackie Desjardin allowed just one hit and struck out 10 in four innings of work to lead Sunnyvale Metro to a 20-6 win over Sunnyvale Southern in the District 44 championship game in the girls softball 9-10 age group.
Mikayla Martinez doubled and homered in the win and Kristin Wheatley tripled and doubled. Audrey Gallien doubled and singled twice for Metro.
Metro had opened the tournament with a 23-20 win over Southern, then defeated Sunnyvale National 10-9 and Los Altos-Mountain View 9-6 to advance to the finals.
Members of the Metro championship team included Jessica Borgman, Lauren Burks, Desjardin, Gallien, Nicole Gil, Jessica Gonzalez, Martinez, Marissa Minderler, Kelly Norris, Nicole Schell, Alicia Tikalsky, Karlyjo Walak and Wheatley. Albert Martinez was the manager of the club and Steve Farrell was the coach.
Southern fought back through the loser's bracket with an 11-6 win over Sunnyvale National to get into the championship game. Emily Henderson tossed a six-hitter for Southern, striking out 10.
Kelley Verstegen doubled and singled twice and Noelle Wood singled and doubled for Southern.
Vanessa Mendiola singled and doubled in the win for National.
Members of the Southern all-star team were Lauren Cole, Henderson, Sonya Joseph, May Beth Merkert, Vanessa McDonald, Stephanie Parks, Quennelle Payton, Jessica Salans, Verstegen, Nicole Wadley and Wood.
Members of the National all-star team were Jennifer daSilva, Jessica Emerson, Genevieve Fernandez, Rochelle Hamilton, Kelly Hess, Kayla Joos, Jennifer Le, Teresa Lopez, Leilani Maya, Mendiola, Erica Nguyen, Amanda Pulmano and Kendra Russell.
