City collects ideas on teen activities

Although poorly attended, a community meeting to discuss teen recreation in Sunnyvale generated good ideas that may be included in a report to the City Council.

At the Aug. 12 meeting at the Community Center, participants said they wanted the city to offer activities for teens that also related to academics.

"Maybe if you had some SAT prep courses, teens would be interested," said George Seiler, who works with youth as a learning counselor. "If they are really busy with school, they won't have time to do anything else."

The Parks and Recreation staff, which is investigating teen recreation needs, coordinated the meeting. It has also sent more than 4,300 surveys to parents of teenagers and talked to hundreds of teens, said Nancy Steward, who is coordinating the project.

The city has also received more than 350 teen surveys that have been distributed around the city.

The Parks and Recreation staff will present its information to the City Council in October, and recommend several options in late December.
