Scott Adams runs with the leaders
Sunnyvale places 13 among top finishers

Scott Adams of Los Gatos was running with the leaders in the San Jose International Triathlon VI.
Well, that's not exactly true. Adams was running, swimming and biking with the leaders in the grueling event at San Jose's Lake Almaden.
The competition began with a 1-kilometer swim. Athletes climbed out of the water to begin a 40K bike ride, and finishing up with a 10K run.
And Adams covered the course well enough to finish among the top 15 pro and elite competitors. Adams finished 13th overall in 2:00:43.
Marci Mauro of Sunnyvale and Lauren Alexander of San Jose were top finished in the women's elite class. Mauro was fourth in 2:02:53 with Alexander fifth in 2:03:29.
Neal Shea of Sunnyvale, Jackie McCleary of Los Gatos and Brian Lavelle, Thomas Carney, Bill Shawhan, Tim Lavelle, Eileen Navarrete, all of San Jose, were individual winners in age group competition at the rugged event. In all, there were five Sunnyvale residents among the top finishers in the different divisions.
B. Lavelle was first in the men's 20-24 division with San Jose's Paul Whittle second, Seb Ziesler sixth, Paul Dribnock seventh and Jamiel Danesh 11th. Brad Nelson of Los Gatos was 12th.
Carney took the 30-34 title with Craig Dolley of Los Gatos third, John Kruempelstaedter of Cupertino 13th and Tim Crenshaw of Los Gatos 14th.
Shawhan roared to a win in the men's 45-49 age group with Craig Hofstetter of Cupertino fifth, and T. Lavelle took the 50-54 title with Walter Radloff of San Jose third and Paul Sudano of Cupertino eighth.
Neal was an easy winner in the men's 60-64 division.
Jeff Fieldhack of Los Gatos was fourth in the men's 25-29 division with Scott Shea of Sunnyvale fifth, Jeff Lanterman of San Jose 17th, Justin Moore of Saratoga 19th and Mark Cosgrove of Cupertino 29th; Chris Blancarte of San Jose was fifth in the 15-19 class; Gregg Trent and David Laberge, both of San Jose, finished five-six in the 35-39 division with Dirk Bartels of Cupertino 13th and Kyle Welch of Sunnyvale 20th; Marc Williams of San Jose was fourth with Mark Johnson of San Jose eighth in the 40-44 class; Lynn Whitney of Los Gatos was 11th in the 55-59 field; and Ken Nash of San Jose was second in the men's 70-and-over division.
Navarrete and McCleary were each winners in female competition.
Navarrete won the 14-and-under title, and McCleary was first in the 30-34 division with Rikke Johansen of Cupertino fourth, Laura Behrens of Sunnyvale 12th, Miki Ochoa of Los Gatos 19th, Jeaneen Teixeira of San Jose 23rd, Monique Davan of Los Gatos 26th and Heidi Karnofel of Cupertino 37th.
Alison Shellman was second in the women's 20-24 class with Stefani Pastorini sixth, Melissa Barnhill 14th and Lisa Dardis 20th. All are from San Jose.
Jami Andrews of San Jose was sixth in the 25-29 age group with April Walewski of Los Gatos 11th; Kristin Webster of Cupertino was fifth in the 35-39 class; and Lisa Yonaka of Los Gatos was second in the 40-44 group.
Sprint Triathlon
A day earlier, in the San Jose Mountain Bike Sprint Triathlon at Lake Almaden, Eric Bean of Sunnyvale raced to an overall victory. Bean, 22, breezed through the 500-yard swim, 10-mile bike ride and 3-mile run in 54:02 to finish almost two and a half minutes ahead of his nearest rival.
Kevin Bowe of Saratoga, a 17-year-old who attends Mitty High School, came through with a surprising ninth overall in 1:00.34. Bowe was competing in his first triathlon.
Robert Kleidon of San Jose finished 12th with Marc Clevenger of Sunnyvale 14th, Archie King of San Jose 22nd and Jeff Hane of Sunnyvale 32nd.
Emily Allison of San Jose was 34th overall and the second female finisher in the fast field.
Barry Meyers of San Jose was 37th with Mauricio Cibrian of San Jose 45th, Thomas James Lynch of Los Gatos 46th, John Fritz of San Jose 51st, Joe Vasilious of Sunnyvale 52nd and Greg Winter of Los Gatos 53rd. Nine athletes from Sunnyvale placed high in the field.
In age group competition, Pearce Selleck of Los Gatos was first in the male 14-and-under division with Max Selleck of Los Gatos second, and Bowe won the 15-19 division.
Bean took the 20-24 class with Stephen Hon of Los Gatos (14th), Judson Ristau of Los Gatos (16th) and Jeff Bogdanovich of Cupertino (20th) all finishing in the top 20.
Clevenger was second in the 30-34 age division, and Kleidon was third in the 35-39 class with Randy Hooks of Los Gatos getting ninth.
Archie King of San Jose was second in the men's 40-44 division with Hector Ruiz of Los Gatos fourth and Jeff Chase of Los Gatos fifth, and Tony Grant of San Jose was second in the 45-49 division with Rudy Cruz of San Jose third, Max Zinsman of Cupertino fourth and Ken Yeager of San Jose fifth.
Ed Carpentier of San Jose was first in the 50-54 division with Dan Selleck of Los Gatos second; Frank O'Sullivan of San Jose was second in the 55-59 class; James Cochrane of Saratoga was fifth in the 60-64 group; and Wally Saunders of San Jose was first in the 65-69 division.
Allison was second overall among the women, but first in the 20-24 age division. Melissa Monahan of San Jose was in second in the age group and Nancy Rivera of Sunnyvale was 13th.
Rachel Rhodes of San Jose was the 14-and-under winner.
