Sunnyvale AYSO kicks off Aug. 24

The Sunnyvale AYSO soccer league will kick off the 1996 season with a soccer carnival on Aug. 24, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., at the Peterson/Palmer Sports Complex.

The event features clinics, food, games and special appearances by members of the San Jose Clash. For more information, call Susan Hall at 245-5721.

Adult Leagues

The City of Sunnyvale is currently accepting registration for adult teams interested in playing basketball or softball this fall.

The basketball season begins Sept. 8 and features a 10-game season and two officials per game. The registration fee is $150 per team, plus $10 for each non-resident.

Softball action will also begin Sept. 8 and the registration deadline is Aug. 22. The cost is $350 per team, plus $10 for each non-resident.

Long Drive Contest

The big hitters will be on the tees at the Pin High Family Golf Center in San Jose for the Long Drive District Finals on Aug. 24, 10 a.m. Drives of more than 350 yards were needed to make the district finals, and the San Jose winner will advance to the national finals in Las Vegas on Sept. 6-11 to vie for a $150,000 purse.

Jetter qualiÞes

Rick Jetter of Los Gatos qualified for the British Senior Open, held in late July at the Royal Portrush Golf Course in Northern Ireland, for the second time is his golf career.

Jetter is the Northern California Professional Golfers' Assocication Director of Golf at Spring Valley Golf Course in Milpitas.

Nothing But Net

The Nothing But Net Back to School 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held Aug. 24 at Silver Creek High School in San Jose. There will be divisions for teams in the following classifications: men's and women's open, high school boys and girls, 6-2 and under, and recreational.

Bicycle tours

The Clean Air Bicycle Challenge, co-sponsored by the Los Gatos Kiwanis Club and the American Lung Association, will be held Sept. 14 with tours starting from Los Gatos High School.

Tours feature loops of 20-miles, 50-kilometers, 100-kilometers and 100-miles. The registration fee runs from $10-$20, and families are welcome.
