Coverage of child-care issue hits its mark
Thank you for your coverage of the problems facing Sunnyvale's child-care field. The difficulties described--from availability and quality of care to worker compensation--are shared throughout the state.
It's also critical to note that, besides allowing parents to work, child care is an economic force in and of itself. As detailed in the economic impact report referenced in the article, child care is a $368 million industry in Santa Clara County. Approximately 12,314 jobs are generated by the child-care industry, and direct child-care employment is comparable in size to the legal services industry and the hotel and motel industry. Child-care is a critical part of the county's economy--despite the fact that the child-care field is clearly struggling.
By reframing child care as a community economic development issue, economic development policies, in addition to child-care programs, then become necessary and viable options to increase the availability of care.
Such policies, implemented by a variety of community stakeholders, not only promote the development of quality, widely available care, but also of a healthy child-care industry that contributes to the local economy.
We hope your coverage of this important issue continues.

Corrections
In the June 28 story, "Lessons in Leadership", The Sun incorrectly reported that materials for a Teddy Bear service project were donated by the Teddy Bear Factory in San Francisco. The material was donated by the Fremont Union High Schools Foundation, who along with the Cupertino Rotary Club, raised funds to cover the cost of the project. The Sun regrets the error.
In the July 5 story "Alano Club evicted with no new home", The Sun incorrectly reported that Sunnyvale property owner Fred Hill had denied the club a lease. The Sun regrets the error.
