Jew draws winning sports card
White Sox repeat as champions
By DICK SPARRER
Randal Jew of Sunnyvale was one of 30 artists nationwide to create a winning entry in Upper Deck's Draw Your Own Trading Card contest. Jew's drawing of Jerry Rice of the San Francisco 49ers will be included in Upper Deck's 1999 MVP football set series now on sale in area stores.
Jew, who has been drawing for 25 years, has been a 49er fan "as long as I have ever watched football."
"I have always been a faithful 49er fan," he said. "My favorite football player of all-time is Jerry Rice. I model myself after Jerry's drive, work habits and commitment to reach the top."
Jew's winning drawing depicted Rice as he appeared when he broke Jim Brown's all-time record for touchdowns scored.
The Upper Deck contest ran from last December through March of this year. More than 3,000 contestants submitted entries in one of three age groups-- 5-8, 9-14 and 15-and-over.
"I always wanted to capture the moment when Jerry broke Jim Brown's all-time touchdown record," added Jew. "I am just glad that Upper Deck Company decided to make a card with my art."
Big League champions
Even before the 1999 season was complete, the Sunnvyale White Sox clinched their second straight District 44 Big League division championship.
The Sox clinched the title early in the season with a 7-5 win over the East Hills Yankees of San Jose's District 59. At the time, the victory helped the Sox improve to 14-0 in league play.
The White Sox finished the regular season with a 15-1 record, their only loss coming at the hands of the rival Sunnyvale Astros. David Attard tossed a six-hitter at the Sox to lead the Astros to an exciting 6-2 victory.
Mario Formosa had three hits in the game for the White Sox and Jeff Mispagel ripped a pair of doubles.
But that was the only loss for the Sox in the regular season. The Sunnyvale Southern Big League team rebounded with a 7-6 win over Cambrian to wrap up a 15-1 year.
Josh Brown crushed a grand slam and Mispagel ripped a solo homer to lead the Sox to the victory. Jeff Christensen, Bryan Lee and Adam Turrey each singled to load the bags for Brown.
Sunnyvale, though, had to battle back from a 6-5 deficit with two runs in the seventh to win it. Don Lima and Jacob Jackson each walked, and James Hayes beat out an infield hit to load the bases. Adam Turrey walked to push home the tying run, and Formosa beat out an infield hit to knock in the game winner.
Turrey and Mispagel each smashed grand slams to spark the White Sox to a 20-3 win over Cambrian. Lima homered and singled twice.
Greg Arioto and Formosa clubbed back-to-back homers in the first inning to start Sunnyvale on the road to a 7-5 win over Cambrian in the second game of the double-header. That win helped the Sox clinch the district championship.
Mispagel, Formosa, Ryan Duhe and James Rodriguez had three hits each in the win. Dan Simonsen was the winning pitcher and Jay Jackson came on to get the save.
Simonsen tossed a four-hit shutout to lead Sunnyvale to a 6-0 win over Scotts Valley. Formosa tripled and Arioto and Jon Frecceri each delivered run-scoring singles in a four-run rally in the third.
Gabe Garcia's two-run single helped Sunnyvale to a 3-2 win over Scotts Valley in the second game of the twin-bill.
Legion champions
Monta Vista Post 642 won the American Legion District 13 "A" championship this summer by beating Palo Alto and San Jose Memory Post in the final week of the regular season.
Monta Vista, made up of players from Cupertino and Sunnyvale, whipped Palo Alto 16-8, then beat Memory Post (made up mostly of players from Prospect, Westmont, Leigh and St. Lawrence) 12-1 and 5-4 in extra innings to clinch the championship.
Members of the title-winning team included Dan Barczi, Matt Cannon, Chris Chalfant, Brandon Douglas, Jessen Grant, Aaron Hall, Andrew Ishak, Ryan Latshaw, John Lozano, Mark McCullough, Adam Milliken, Andy Myers, Ajay Nagdev, Brian Purdy, Dustin Realini, Ryan Realini, Ryan Watkins and Casey Wilms.
