    Fremont Pool holds 'Olympic Event'

    The Friends of Fremont Pool is holding an "Olympic Event" on Sept. 30 to honor its "Big Fish Donors." Shark, ($10,000), Marlin ($425,000) and Whale ($50,000) contributors will be honored and thanked. Hosts of the event will be Jenny and George Aviet, owners of Chez TJ's in Mountain View. Funds for the pool now total $762,000. Those interested in participating can contact 408.245.2875. Checks can be made to "City of Sunnyvale Pool Trust Fund" and mailed to Friends of Fremont Pool at P.O. Box 2656, Sunnyvale, 94087.

    Athena Award open for nominations

    The Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for the Athena Award to be presented at its annual Showcase Sunnyvale on Nov. 3. The Athena Award program is a nationwide effort to recognize women who excel in their chosen field, who have devoted time and energy to their community in a meaningful way, and who assist other women in reaching their full leadership potential. Nomination forms and instructions can be obtained through the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce at 408.736.4971. The deadline for submitting nominations is Oct.1. A selection committee of community leaders will review all nomination forms and select the Athena Award recipient.

    District offers lunch program

    The Sunnyvale School District recently announced its policy of providing free and reduced-price meals for children served under the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program. Household size and income criteria will determine eligibility for the program.

    FUHSD gets state funding

    Thanks in part to state Assemblywoman Elaine Alquist's efforts, the Fremont Union High School District will receive $75,000 from the state education budget for its Digital Divide Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships for low-income families participating in its mobile computing program. The program goals include increasing the number of students and the number of low-income students using laptop computers in the program. They also ncludes improving instructional technology tools of teachers in the program so they can provide students with more exciting learning experiences. The district currently has pilot programs in core curriculum areas at four of its five high schools involving 12 teachers and 120 students.
