'Sunnyvale Sun', SVCN take top honors at CNPA convention

In the newspaper business, we generally try to refrain from tooting our own horns. But in some circumstances, it just seems appropriate.

The Sunnyvale Sun recently was honored by the California Newspaper Publishers Association with a second place award for Best Feature Story. The award-winning piece, "Living Reminder" by Kelly Wilkinson detailed the story of Holocaust survivor Alex Bauer.

The awards presentation was made during ceremonies at the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego on Aug. 12, where the organization met for its annual convention. Executive Editor Dan Pulcrano accepted the awards.

The Cupertino Courier's sister publications in the Silicon Valley Community Newspapers group did well by CNPA as well.

The Saratoga News was honored by CNPA judges as a newspaper of General Excellence. Judges singled out the newspaper as the best weekly of its size in the state.

The Los Gatos Weekly-Times received a first place for Public Service in 11,000 to 25,000 circulation for its ongoing campaign to put comprehensive senior services in Los Gatos under one roof.

Our newest paper, the Campbell Reporter received a first place for Page Layout; and the Cupertino Courier took first place for Best Local Spot News.

In the Metro Newspapers group, former Saratoga News photographer George Sakkestad took a first place for Photo Essay for his powerful photographic documentation of a cancer patient's last days which ran in Metro Santa Cruz.

A second place also went to Metro Santa Cruz for Special Issue. Metro received a first place for Business or Financial Story, and Metro's classified section won first place in the Classified Advertising category.
