Educators headed to Washington to recieve award

At the Aug. 22 Sunnyvale City Council meeting Superintendent Dr. Joe Rudnicki announced that as a result of Sunnyvale Middle School receiving the National Blue Ribbon School Award last school year, representatives of the school will travel to Washington, D.C., from Sept. 21 to 23.

The three representatives--Linda Killian of the Board of Education, principal Tom Sutkus, and superintendent Rudnicki--will be given the honor of meeting with President Bill Clinton, as well as participating in other Blue Ribbon ceremonies.

In order to qualify for consideration for this national award, schools must first receive the California Distinguished School Award from the State. Afterwards, about half of the Distinguished Schools are then nominated for the national award.

Sunnyvale Middle School, one of 198 schools nationwide to receive the award, is the first Sunnyvale school to receive the award. However, two other Sunnyvale schools, San Miguel and Ellis Schools have also been named California

Distinguished Schools. Rudnicki expressed his hopes that the other two schools will soon be honored with the same national award as Sunnyvale Middle School.
