Donner Lake suffers from civilization

Making choices isn't always easy

Opinion should not have been printed

I was appalled by the article Democrats Destroying Democracy, Decency [Letters & Opinions Aug. 9). Clearly the venomous ranting of a rabid zealot. The kind of thing one finds clogging one's email as spam. Not the kind of stuff one expects to read in a responsible newspaper. Even intelligent Republicans (pardon the oxymoron) would scoff at it.

I think the job of editors is to separate the wheat from the chaff and to discard things that are truly awful and have nothing intelligent to say. (God knows they have rejected enough of my writings, probably including this letter.) The first amendment not withstanding, this "opinion" should never have been printed. If you printed it as a joke or a device to elicit equally venomous response from the other side, it was still a disservice to the readers.

As long as we're on the subject of destroying democracy, I would ask any reader who took that article seriously to think of this. Some eight years ago, we elected a president whom the Republicans didn't like at all (they seldom like Democratic presidents). Since then, they have tried every way they could think of, fair or foul, to get rid of him. Regardless of what anyone thinks of his character, he is the man we elected, using our democratic process.

The attempt to deny us that process--that, in my humble opinion, is trying to destroy democracy.

    Thanks for coverage

I would like to thank you for the very nice article about the Sunnyvale Gymnastics Club, and in particular your great coverage of our coach. [Sun, Aug. 16] My daughter really enjoyed reading about her teammates and the club.

You did not mention that we are co-sponsored by the Sunnyvale Park and Recreation Department, and that many of the girls begin with the park and rec classes. In October we will be hosting a gymnastics competition to which the public is invited.

    Thank you again,
