    Sunnyvale runs

    The 18th annual Watermelon Run returns to Fremont High School in Sunnyvale on Sept. 7, 3:30 p.m. The yearly run is open to all Fremont alumni, students, staff and coaches. The course covers 2.1 miles across the school's campus, and there is watermelon provided for all participants.

    A week later, Fremont will host the 16th annual Firebird Invitational, with runners from 15 schools competing on the same campus course on Sept. 14, 3:30 p.m.

    BASHOF donations

    The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame will donate more than $120,000 in athletic-equipment grants to boys and girls youth sports organizations in the area as part of its youth fund.

    BASHOF made check donations to all of the Santa Clara County Boys and Girls Clubs as well as to EMQ Children and Family Services, Los Gatos High School, Miller Middle School, the San Jose Midnight Basketball League, San Jose Pacific Pony Baseball, the Serra Little League in Sunnyvale, St. Elizabeth's Day Home and the Sunnyvale Swim Club.

    The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame has distributed more than $1.6 million in grants through its youth fund since 1981. the grand-application filing period is Sept. 1 through Jan. 31. For information regarding grant applications, call 415.352.8827 or check www.bashof.org.
