With help of VTA, city to build sidewalks near Moffett airfield

In the latest phase of construction on the light rail line through Sunnvyale, City Council members Aug. 18 approved $375,000 in seed money from the Valley Transportation Authority to construct a massive sidewalk project.

Sidewalks near light rail stations along Java Drive will undergo reconstruction to give future daily commuters to the Moffett Industrial Park area easy access to transit terminals.

Originally, the VTA did not include the sidewalk project in the Tasman West Corridor Project, but engineers recognized current sidewalks in the industrial area were insufficient, according to a city report.

The city is scheduled to begin construction next summer, and the project should be completed by Dec. 31, 1999, according to Sunnyvale transportation planner Jack Whitthaus.

"We're starting with a dollar figure, and we're going to build as much as we can," Whitthaus said.

Whitthaus said it was too early to estimate how many miles of linking pedestrian paths the city will build.

In other light-rail construction developments within Sunnyvale, mobile-home owners who live along Tasman should have their sidewalks completed within 45 days.

At the Aug. 18 meeting, council also approved new construction on a sidewalk and bike path project at Fair Oaks Avenue and Persian Drive along with a sidewalk project on Mathilda Avenue between Lockheed-Martin and Moffett Park Drive. The projects would have cost the city more than $150,000, but the city secured grants to cover the costs.
