    Las Palmas Tennis center expands

    There will be a grand opening on Sept. 8 from noon to 3 p.m. to celebrate the expansion of the Sunnyvale Las Palmas Tennis Center. This celebration will kick off with a ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by activities and informational booths.

    The expanded tennis center includes three more courts, bringing the total to 16. New services include a cafe and catering service. Players will also have more parking and landscaping improvements. The enhancements will also enable the center to host larger events.

    Sunnyvale ranked 12th most 'kid-friendly' suburb

    In the recently published Kid-Friendly Cities Report Card, complied by Zero Population Growth, the city of Sunnyvale received an overall A grade, ranking 12th in the nation among cities of comparable size. Sunnyvale performed especially well in the three categories of public safety, health and environment.

    The report card is part of the eighth biannual ZPG Children's Environmental Index.

    Athena Award open for nominations

    The Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for the Athena Award to be presented at its annual Showcase Sunnyvale on Nov. 3. The Athena Award Program is a nationwide effort to recognize women who excel in their chosen field;

    who have devoted time and energy to their community in a meaningful way; and who assist other women in reaching their full leadership potential.

    Nomination forms and instructions can be obtained through the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce at 408.736.4971. The deadline for submitting nominations is Oct.1. A selection committee of community leaders will review all nomination forms and select the Athena Award recipient.

    Volunteer position openings

    The Sunnyvale School District Education Foundation board has volunteer openings for those interested in promoting innovative education ideas, practices and working with the board president and administrative assistant. Candidates must have financial and/or an accounting background and be familiar with tax requirements of 501(c)(3) organizations. For more information, call 408.738.8708.
