    Football openers

The action returns this weekend for high school football fans when the 2001 season gets under way with a slate of nonleague games on area fields.

Homestead heads to Independence at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 7, and Fremont will be in action a night later when the Firebirds host Westmont at 7:30 p.m.

    Catfish Swim

They say the Lexington Reservoir is filled with catfish.

Well, if that's true, then the catfish had their peaceful swimming disturbed for a weekend when the annual Catfish Open Water Swim returned.

Thousands of swimmers splashed across the reservoir in the 1.2-mile and 2.4-mile event. Some of the swimmers were wearing wetsuits, others were nearly as bare as the catfish the race is named for.

Dan Veatch, 36, of San Francisco was the winner in the 1.2-mile skin race with 16-year-old Richie Crowder of Los Gatos a close second. Barbara Crowder, 43, of Los Gatos won the women's 1.2-mile skin race.

In the 1.2-mile wetsuit race, Robert Crowder, 45, of Los Gatos cruised to a first-place finish in the men's division and Cathrin Barsch, 34, was the women's winner.

Veatch was the overall winner in the 2.4-mile skin race and Ashley Frogner, 21, was the women's winner. In the 2.4-mile wetsuit swim, Lisa Lemmon, 24, was the women's open winner and Eric Bean, 25, won the men's division.

In the "Team in Training" .6 mile swim, 23-year-old Christine Nelson of Cupertino was the overall women's winner, and 36-year-old William Delveaux won the men's race.

    Firebird returns

The 17th annual Firebird Invitational returns to the Fremont High School campus in Sunnyvale on Sept. 13, 3:30 p.m.

The cross country event attracts many of the top high school teams in the area.

Coaches interested in entering their teams should call Fremont coach Pat Lawson at 408.522.2400.
