    Districts to hold open house for new residents

    New residents in the Cupertino and Fremont Union School districts can meet with teachers and district officials Sept. 15 at the annual Potluck Picnic for Newcomers, hosted by the Asian American Parents Association. It is an opportunity for parents to learn how they can work and communicate with teachers and school administrators to enhance their children's learning experience.

    The potluck will be held between 5 and 8 p.m. at the Queensboro Swim Club, at 1138 Miller Ave. in San Jose. Reservations are due by Sept. 13 to Mei Teng at 408.255.6140 or Ming-li Chu at 408.447.1941.

    Volunteer position open at Sunnyvale school district

    The Sunnyvale School District Education Foundation board has volunteer openings for those interested in promoting innovative education ideas, practices and working with the board president and administrative assistant. Candidates must have financial and/or accountant background, and be familiar with tax requirements of 501(c)(3) organizations. For more information, call 408.738.8708.

    Athena Award open for nominations

    The Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for the Athena Award to be presented at its annual Showcase Sunnyvale on Nov. 3.

    The Athena Award program is a nationwide effort to recognize women who excel in their chosen field; who have devoted time and energy to their community in a meaningful way; and who assist other women in reaching their full leadership potential. Nomination forms and instructions can be obtained through the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce at 408.736.4971. The deadline for submitting nominations is Oct.1. A selection committee of community leaders will review all nomination forms and select the Athena Award recipient.
