Fremont drops 20-12 decision to Prospect

Dan Brown waited a long time to get it, but he experienced his first victory as Del Mar varsity football coach last Thursday night when the Dons knocked off Homestead 20-12 in a nonleague game.

And the experience was well worth the wait.

Brown took over the Del Mar program last fall, but the Dons struggled through a 0-9-1 season. They went 0-5-1 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

But much has changed in Del Mar football this fall. The Dons are now members of the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL... and they also have a victory.

Senior running back Heavi Williams blasted over from the 4 to give the Dons the early lead in the game last Thursday. Ted Perry kicked the extra point, and the Dons led 7-0 in the first period.

Homestead scored before the end of the period when David Tucker raced in from the 11, but the Dons responded with a TD in the second quarter, this time on a 1-yard plunge by Williams. After Perry kicked another extra point, Del Mar was up 14-6 at the half.

Ruben Mastin broke the game open in the third quarter when he was off to the races on a 98-yard touchdown run to up the Del Mar lead to 20-6.

But the Mustangs never gave up. Homestead scored again when Aaron Mansfield went 6 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 20-12. But it was too little, too late for the Mustangs.

Homestead will be gunning for its first win of the young season this week when the Mustangs head to Cupertino to take on Monta Vista on Sept. 17, 7:30 p.m.

    Firebirds fall

Prospect, like Lynbrook, came through with a come-from-behind victory to knock off Fremont 20-12 last week.

The Panthers trailed Fremont 6-0 at the half, but outscored the Firebirds 20-6 in the second half to pull out the hard-earned victory.

A couple of touchdown runs by Saladin Washington in the third period matched the two TDs scored by Fremont. Washington ran one in from the 8, then scored on a 5-yard run. Donald Austin ran in for the two-point conversion after the second score, and Prospect took a 14-12 lead into the final period.

Prospect closed out the scoring in the fourth on a 3-yard TD run by Ryan Sainsbury.

Washington had a big night for Prospect, rambling for 164 yards on just 14 carries.

The Panthers will try to make it two straight when they visit Mt. Pleasant on Sept. 17, 3:30 p.m. The Cardinals lost 49-14 to Piedmont Hills in their opener.

Fremont will be gunning for its first win of the young season on Sept. 17, 7:15 p.m., when the Firebirds visit Westmont for a nonleague game. The Warriors lost 28-24 to Lynbrook last Thursday.

    Knights fall

The King's Academy boys soccer team dropped a tough 2-0 decision to Sacred Heart Prep last week. The loss left the Knights 2-2 in the young season.
