'Birds win, Mustangs fall

The Fremont and Homestead football teams each opened the season last week, but with different results.

Davin Clark and Jason Placencia led the running attack as the Firebirds ran over Prospect 13-7 in a nonleague game to open the year.

Clark topped the 100-yard mark and scored Fremont's first touchdown of the year on a 1-yard plunge. Placencia, the club's quarterback, scrambled two yards for a TD in the third period to give Fremont its margin of victory.

Homestead, though, lost its opener to powerful Aragon, falling 35-0 to the Dons in the nonleague test.

Invitational

Central Coast Section powers Los Gatos and Saratoga will head up the 15-team field for boys' and girls' teams when the Firebird Invitational returns to Fremont this week. The first race gets under way at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 17.

Santa Clara, Cupertino, Wilcox, Homestead, Lynbrook, Los Altos, Milpitas, Del Mar, Westmont, Gunn, Monta Vista and Mountain View will also join host Fremont for the tough two-miler.

Armour wins

Abra Armour of Sunnyvale finished first in her age group at the RedBull Catfish Open Water Swim at the Lexington Reservoir on Aug. 30. Armour cruised through the 1.2-mile course in 27:55.8 to finish first in the girls' 19-and-under division and sixth overall in the women's field.
