Fremont wins Firebird run
By Dick Sparrer
Fremont didn't have much to cheer about last week when played host to 16 other schools in the annual Firebird Invitational run across the school's Sunnyvale campus.
The Firebirds finished a distant eighth in the boys varsity race, and they didn't even field a complete team for the girls varsity race.
So there wasn't much for Fremont to cheer about ... at least, not in the varsity division.
There was plenty of cheering for the Firebirds, though, when it came time for the boys frosh-soph race.
Austin Sardella and Randal Polgar, a pair of talented Fremont sophomores, finished first and third in the division to lead the Firebirds to the frosh-soph team title at the Thursday meet.
Sardella covered the 2.1-mile course in 11:05 to finish first with Polgar a close third in 11:09.
Soph Dennis Campos ended up 16th in 12:05 with freshman Min Pak 20th in 12:12 and frosh Haruki Shimoda 26th in 12:35 to round out the top five for the Firebirds.
Fremont ran up a low 66 team points to win the frosh-soph title. Lynbrook was second at 89 with Santa Clara a distant third at 138.
In the boys varsity division, Rick Trevino was 46th in 12:09 to lead the Fremont effort. Casey McCleary was 52nd in 12:26.
J.T. Martin of the King's Academy finished 38th in 11:56 in the varsity race with Joseph Feizadeh of Homestead 53rd in 12:28.
In girls varsity action, Rebecca Boyle of Homestead finished 14th overall in 13:14. Kassie Korobkova led the Fremont effort, running 15:18 for 56th.
Sophomore Mohamed Samatar of Fremont was fourth in 12:37 in the boys junior varsity race.
In girls JV action, Stephanie Skidmore of Homestead was seventh in 15:21. Sophia Urrutia-Lopez led the Fremont effort, finishing 23rd in 17:05.
