Fremont didn't have to eat up much real estate to score a couple of touchdowns against Saratoga last Friday night.

An interception set up one TD for the Firebirds, and a failed attempt by the Falcons on a fake punt set up another that tied the game 14-14 early in the second half.

But the opportunistic Firebirds ran out of opportunites in the second half, and Saratoga managed three unanswered scores to pull out a 31-14 nonleague win over Fremont.

Saratoga scored first in the game, but Fremont answered right back when a pass interception set up 1-yard touchdown run by Donnell Forks.

The Falcons scored again before the half to take a 14-6 lead in at intermission, but it was Fremont scoring first in the second half.

Saratoga faked a punt, but didn't catch the Firebirds napping. Fremont stuffed the play and took over deep in Saratoga territory.

The Firebirds took advantage of the opportunity when Nick Pullano hit Ron Cerda on a fourth down play with a 10-yard scoring toss. Pullano threw to Jesse Enchill for the 2-point conversion, and the game was tied 14-14.

But Saratoga scored a touchdown before the end of the third period, then added a touchdown and a field goal in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.

The loss left the Firebirds 0-2 for the year. They had lost their season opener to Westmont a week earlier.

Fremont will try to get into the win column this week when the Firebirds host Monta Vista at Diesner Field on Sept. 22, 7:30 p.m., in another nonleague game.

    Mustangs win

Homestead claimed its first win of the young football season last Saturday night with a convincing 49-18 victory over Lynbrook.

The Mustangs, who had lost their opener to Independence, will take a 1-1 season record up against Cupertino on Sept. 22, 7:30 p.m., at Cupertino.
