Firebirds, Mustangs claim victories
BY Dick Sparrer
David Elliott ran for two touchdowns and Mark Ahrens ran for a TD and threw for another to lead the Fremont football team to a lopsided 34-0 nonleague win over Westmont last Friday night.
Elliott blasted over from the three in the first quarter and from the eight in the second period to help the Firebirds jump out to a 14-0 halftime lead against the Warriors.
Ahrens took over for Fremont in the second half, tossing 49 yards to Victor Lopez for a score and running 44 yards for another touchdown.
Mario Jeffcoat rounded out the scoring for the Firebirds with a 6-yard touchdown run in the third period.
Elliott rambled for 117 yards on 13 carries in the win. Ahrens finished the night with 80 yards rushing on just seven carries, and the senior quarterback completed all four of his passes for 90 yards.
The same night, Homestead rolled to a 34-28 nonleague win over rival Monta Vista.
The Matadors jumped out to an 8-0 lead on a safety and a TD, but Casler Johnston scored on a 10-yard run before the end of the first period to cut the lead to 8-6.
The Mats scored twice in the second quarter, but Homestead answered each TD. Johnston scored on a 6-yard run, and Darrell Turner returned a kick-off 88 yards for a TD. David Tucker ran in for a two-point conversion, and the Mustangs led 21-20 at intermission.
Monta Vista went up 28-21 in the third, but Turner returned a fumble 40 yards for a TD in the fourth, then hauled in a 36-yard scoring toss from Aaron Mansfield for the win.
Mansfield completed eight of nine passes for 151 yards and the all-important touchdown in the fourth.
This Friday, Homestead will battle Lynbrook at Fremont and Homestead will take on Monta Vista at Cupertino. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
