Police arrest suspect in fatal hit-and-run

Tuesday Sunnyvale police made an arrest in the fatal hit-and-run that occurred on Fremont Avenue early Sunday morning. According to Chuck Ennett of the Sunnyvale Public Safety office, there were no eye witnesses, but police were able to use evidence left at the scene to identify the vehicle involved as a gray, full-sized Chevy or GMC from the '70s or '80s.

Based on this profile, police scoured records and the area looking for a vehicle with damage that matched this profile. Police made contact with a number of cars before arresting Nancy Jean Hara of Cupertino. Hara is in custody awaiting charges.

SEA and city each pick reps for negotiating

Sunnyvale's largest employee union and the city each chose a representative last week to join a three-person arbitration panel to continue contract negotiations between the two sides. The two sides have been locked in salary dispute since January. Contracts for the SEA, which covers almost 500 positions throughout the city, expired the end of June.

Each side submitted the names of two potential representatives to councilmembers who then voted on one for each side. On the city side, councilmembers unanimously chose Marc Hynes, a private attorney in Mountain View who served as Sunnyvale's attorney between 1975 and 1981.

For the SEA, councilmembers chose Anthony Spitileri, the president of Palo Alto's Firefighters' Association who has also served on Sunnyvale's Parks and Recreation Commission and the city's Advisory Commission for Paramedics.

Both members together will select a third person from an American Arbitration Association to complete the panel, which will continue negotiations with each side.

Pool association meets in support of hoped-for pool

"Friends of the Fremont Pool" will meet on Wednesday, September 29th, at 7:30 pm, in the De Anza Park building in De Anza Park. The group has formed in response to the lack of swimming facilities in Sunnyvale and is encouraging the city to enter into a joint-use agreement with Fremont High School. The school plans to replace its current pool within the next year and offered to partner with the city to share costs and use.

The Parks and Recreation Department initiated a study of the arrangement this summer, and the group is soliciting input to then provide to the city.

The meeting's guest will be Pete Tuana, principal of Fremont High School.

Council candidates square off in public forum

On Sept. 29, the Sunnyvale public will have an opportunity to assess candidates for the November city council race. The forum, in which candidates will give opening and closing statements in addition to answering questions submitted by the public, is sponsored by the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce and the League of Women Voters. All six candidates are expected to attend, according to Chamber of Commerce President and director Suzi Blackman.

Mayor Manuel Valerio and Vice Mayor Pat Vorreiter are running unopposed; councilmember Jack Walker is running for re-election against David Schumann; and Tim Risch and Frances Rowe are running against each other for seat number 7, which is being vacated by Stan Kawczynski because of term limits.

The forum will be held in City Council Chambers at City Hall and will be broadcast on KSUN, channel 17. It will begin at 7 p.m. and conclude at 9 p.m.. Ray Montalvo will moderate.
