Vikes, Dons open
The West Valley and De Anza community college football teams will both open Coast Conference play this week at their home turf.
The Vikings will host Sierra College in a 3 p.m. game on Sept. 25 in Saratoga, and the Dons will host Yuba a day later at 1 p.m. in Cupertino.
Youth hockey
The Silicon Valley Quakes, a traveling roller hockey team that plays out of San Jose, will hold try-outs for the 10-and-under and 8-and-under (ages as of Dec. 31, 1998) on Oct. 3 and 10, 2:30-4:30 p.m. each day, at the Gremic Roller Hockey facility at 401 Jackson St. in San Jose.
The year-round program is open to players from anywhere in the area. For more information, call Dave Inouye at 978-3579.
Fall ball signups
The Sunnyvale Southern Little League hosts a fall baseball program for youth ages 13-14 through Nov. 7. For more information on the program, call Andy Gonzales at 773-1615.
Great America Run returns
The annual Carousel-to-Coaster Run returns to the Great America amusement park in Santa Clara on Sept. 27, 8:30 a.m.
The event features a 10K run and 5K walk. The cost is $20 and includes a race shirt (while supplies last). Registration is set for 7-8 a.m. on race day.
