Homestead hands coach his Þrst win
By Dick Sparrer
The Homestead Mustangs did in the second week of the 1997 football season what they couldn't do in the first--give brand-new head coach Rich Delgado his first varsity win.
Homestead actually trailed this one 14-0 at the half, but battled back in the second half to pull out the impressive 15-14 win against Seaside.
Senior Jason Woods, who rambled for 185 yards in the game, ran one in from 32 yards out in the third period, then scored on a 7-yard run in the fourth.
The Mustangs had failed to convert after either of the TDs, though, and trailed 14-12 in the final moments of the game.
But senior lineman Brian Tenner recovered a fumble to give the Mustangs one final chance. And senior quarterback Andy Meyers took advantage of the opportunity, moving Homestead into position for a game-winning 27-yard field goal by sophomore Neal Mudgett.
The win evened Homestead's record at 1-1.
