Residents clean local waterways
Volunteers cleaned thousands of pounds of garbage from waterways in the South Bay Area, including Sunnyvale, Sept. 21 as part of Coastal Cleanup Day.
In Sunnyvale alone, 224 volunteers collected 9,490 pounds of trash at three city sites, including the Water Pollution Control Plant levy and Stevens and Calabazas creeks. Volunteers found a bumper, bullet shells, tampon shells, a fire hose, three full fire extinguishers and some shopping carts.
At Fountain Blue/Calabazas Creek, Fremont Older/Calabazas Creek and Stevens Creek Reservoir in Cupertino, 217 volunteers gathered 8,200 pounds of trash, including pornography negatives and pictures, a tire filled with cement, a chest of drawers and a soccer ball.
At the 27 sites cleaned up in Santa Clara County, 1,721 people collected more than 67,00 pounds of trash, half of which will be recycled.
In 1995 more than 1,000 participated in the South Bay Coastal Cleanup Day. They cleaned up 16 sites in 11 cities.
