Shemmel Ferguson scored two touchdowns and sophomore quarterback Dustin Realini scored one TD and threw for another to lead the Monta Vista football team to a 27-7 win over Fremont last Friday night.

It was actually Fremont taking the early lead in the game. After a scoreless first half, Anthony Baza got Fremont on the scoreboard with a second-period touchdown.

Senior Jason Placencia, a pitcher on the Fremont baseball team last spring, pitched a 33-yard TD toss to Baza, and Brian O'Conner kicked the extra point to make it 7-0.

The Firebirds would hold a lead through halftime, but it would only be 7-6 as Ferguson returned Fremont's ensuing kick off 90 yards for Monta Vista's first touchdown.

Realini gave the Matadors the lead when he shot over from the 1 in the third quarter.

Monta Vista upped its lead to 21-7 before the end of the third when Ferguson scored on a 3-yard run.

Realini capped the scoring in the game when he fired a 24-yard TD pass to A.J. Nagdev.

The win helped Monta Vista push its season record to 2-1 as the Matadors ready to open the SCVAL season this week. The Mats will host Los Gatos on Oct. 1, 7:30 p.m., at Cupertino in the De Anza Division opener for each club.

Fremont, meanwhile, slipped to 1-2 for the year. The Firebirds open El Camino Division play at home on Oct. 1, 7:30 p.m., against Santa Clara.

    Mustangs roll to victory

The Homestead football team rolled to a 30-0 victory over Lynbrook in nonleague play last Friday. The win helped the Mustangs improve to 2-1 and the Vikings slipped to 0-3.

Both clubs open SCVAL play this Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Mustangs visit powerful Wilcox to open play in the De Anza Division, and the Vikings take on Gunn at Foothill College to open the El Camino Division season.

Darrell Turner carried 10 times for 122 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Mustangs to the big win over the Vikings. Homestead built up a 30-0 lead by intermission and coasted from there to the win.

Robbie Garcia, who ran 16 times for 97 yards, scored on a 7-yard run and ran in for the two-point conversion to give the Mustangs a quick 8-0 lead in the first quarter.

Turner made it 14-0 before the end of the period when he took off on a 68-yard TD run.

Turner scored from the 18, then ran in for the two-pointer, to make it 22-0 in the second quarter.

Joe Andrews blasted over from the 1, and quarterback Aaron Mansfield hit Paul Papoulias for the two-point conversion to give the Mustangs the 30-0 lead before the half.

    Girls Volleyball

Senior outside hitter Amy Gorton blasted 20 kills last week, but the Fremont girls volleyball team lost twice in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Gorton had seven kills in a 15-3, 15-7, 15-9 loss to Saratoga, and she came back with 13 kills in a tough 6-15, 15-12, 15-4, 2-15, 15-12 loss to Wilcox.

Homestead also lost twice last week in the division, falling 15-4, 15-9, 15-10 to rival Cupertino and 15-7, 10-15, 16-14, 15-6 to Saratoga.

Cupertino had won the team title at the King's Academy Invitational the weekend before, beating Marshall 15-8, 15-9 in the finals and host King's 15-11, 15-11 in the semifinals.

"We played about as well as we could play," said Cupertino coach Marty Redman. "The 15-2, 15-2 win over Notre Dame-San Jose was near perfect. They're not a bad team."

Cupertino opened the tourney with wins over Willow Glen, Urban and Notre Dame-San Jose to advance to the semi's.

Margaret Donoghue led the Pioneers with 32 kills and seven blocks in the tournament. Brynn Zinsman had 20 kills and 31 digs, and Christine Adrian added three blocks.

Meghan Zuck was 44-of-46 serving for 34 points, and she had eight aces. Amy Liao was 42-of-43 serving for 30 points, including 12 aces, and she led the squad with 78 assists.

Sepideh Ghafari was 44-of-46 serving for 30 points, including six aces, and she chipped in with 26 digs.

    Girls Tennis

The Homestead and Fremont girls tennis teams each came up winners last week in SCVAL El Camino Division play.

The Mustangs won twice, beating Wilcox 4-3 and Santa Clara 5-2. Homestead improved to 4-0 in division play.

Fremont, meanwhile, split a pair of league matches. The Firebirds lost 7-0 to Santa Clara, but came back to beat Mountain View 5-2. The 'Birds are now 1-3 in the division.

    Field Hockey

The Homestead girls field hockey team lost its only contest last week, falling 2-0 to Los Altos in nonleague play. The Mustangs are 0-1 and the Eagles are 1-3 for the year.

    King's Fifth

The King's Academy boys soccer team scored a second-half goal to pull out a 1-0 victory over Pinewood in the fifth-place game at the Sacred Heart Prep Gator Shootout Tournament last weekend.

It was a lone goal by Daniel Gordon that helped the Knights pull out the exciting win over Pinewood.

King's, 7-3-1 for the year, had beaten North Valley Baptist 4-0 earlier in the week.
