Sueh-Han Liew has been running shoulder-to-shoulder with the best in the Central Coast Section this season.
She was when she finished eighth in the Firebird Invitational hosted by her own Fremont High School a couple of weeks ago, and she was again last week when she finished in the top 20 at the rugged Central Park Invitational in Santa Clara.
The talented Fremont senior finished 15th in a rugged Central Park field that included top competitors from Palo Alto, St. Francis, Los Gatos and Saratoga.
"She's being more assertive," said Fremont coach Pat Lawson of Liew, who will compete along with the rest of the Firebirds at the Artichoke Run in Half Moon Bay on Oct. 3.
Doug Cameron also ran well at Central Park. The Fremont senior was 13th overall to lead all Firebird finishers.
The Fremont runners were coming off a solid finish a week earlier at their own Firebird Invitational.
Liew finished eighth overall in 13:23 in the rugged field with teammate Jennifer Brown 27th in 14:16.
Cameron was eighth in 11:12 to lead the Fremont boys. Tin Tran came home in 38th in 13:14.
Eric Fontes was a standout for Fremont in the boys frosh-soph division. Fontes clocked in at 11:34 to finish ninth in his division to lead the Firebirds to 11th in the team standings. Philip Mandelstamm was 42nd in 12:28 for the 'Birds.
Volleyball
The girls volleyball teams at Homestead and Fremont had very different experiences when they opened play in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League last week.
The Mustangs opened league play with a 15-4, 15-8, 15-3 win over Mountain View. Homestead is now 8-5 for the year.
Fremont, though, lost 15-5, 15-10, 13-15, 15-6 to Saratoga, then fell 15-8, 15-3, 11-15, 15-13 to Wilcox.
The girls from the King's Academy, meanwhile, posted a 15-8, 15-11, 13-15, 15-6 win over Valley Christian of Dublin in a nonleague match last week.
Field hockey
Julie Speckels and Lisa Cox each scored first-half goals, both off Michelle Wald assists, to lift the Homestead girls field hockey team to a Santa Teresa Division win over Saratoga.
The Mustangs opened up the 2-0 lead before intermission, then battled the Falcons to a scoreless tie in the second half to clinch the victory.
Homestead is now 1-0 in league play and 2-1 for the year.
Fremont, meanwhile, was blanked 5-0 by Cupertino in a nonleague game last week.
Tennis
The Fremont and Homestead girls tennis teams opened the league season in similar fashion last week.
The Firebirds were blanked 7-0 by Lynbrook in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL and Homestead lost a 7-0 nod to Monta Vista in the De Anza Division.
Girls water polo
Sheena Hovey and Danielle Ravichandran each scored goals, but it wasn't enough to keep the Homestead girls water polo team from dropping a 7-3 decision to Saratoga in El Camino Division play last week.
