Fremont loses two

The Fremont girls' field hockey lost twice in league play last week. The Firebirds dropped a 3-0 decision to Gilroy and lost 2-0 to Cupertino in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

A first-half goal by Beth Loveless off an Yvonne Armstrong assist and a second-half goal by Stephanie French sparked Cupertino to the win over the Firebirds.

Fremont gave up a goal in the first half and two more in the second half in the loss to Gilroy.

Mustangs top 'Birds

The Homestead girls' volleyball team spiked Fremont 15-1, 15-9, 15-13 in El Camino Division play last week.

The Mustangs, now 2-0 in division play and 6-3 for the year, had opened the week with a 15-13, 15-10, 15-5 victory over Wilcox.

Fremont, 0-3 for the year and 0-2 in the division, lost 15-7, 15-10, 17-15 to Santa Clara to open the week.

The Firebirds dropped a 15-9, 15-10, 12-15, 15-4 decision to The King's Academy in nonleague play last week. The Knights lost 15-9, 15-5, 16-14 to Menlo School later in the week, slipping to 1-7 for the year.

De Anza wins, ties

The De Anza Community College women's soccer team whipped Bakersfield 6-0 before battling American River to a 2-2 tie in nonconference action last week. The Dons are now 2-1-2 for the year.

Golf Tournament

The Tee'd Off Golf program, a series of tournaments for men and women, will tee off the season with a meeting Oct. 2 in the banquet room at the Sunnyvale Municipal Golf Course. For more information on the program, call 866-4913 or 296-0668.
