    Council approves events banners

The Sunnyvale City Council, at its Sept. 25 meeting, approved the city staff's plan to use banners and signs to promote non-city sponsored community events.

According to Linda Bagneschi, communications officer for the city, banners and signs for the city are now located at the intersection of Wolfe Road and El Camino Real, at the Sunnyvale Community Center, and street poles along El Camino. The plan would expand the number of poles on other streets throughout the city that could display signs for events held by community organiations. At the meeting, Bagneschi said organizations that apply to put up signs or banners would pay for their installation and removal themselves.

She added banner space and signage would probably be approved on a first-come, first-served basis. However, the city will continue to have first priority.

The council unanimously approved the allocation of $25,000 for the program and the re-evaluation of the program after two year's time. Deputy Communications Officer Lupe Portillo was appointed the community event coordinator.

Councilwoman Julia Miller dissented on the two-month limit set for such signs and banners. However, Mayor Jack Walker said there would be some leeway on the limit and that special cases, such as "Spare the Air," which runs the length of summer, would receive special consideration.

    Program sponsors lawnmower trade-in

The city of Sunnyvale's recycling department is encouraging the

public to exchange their gas lawn mowers for more efficient electric mowers for just $199.99, at the SMART Station, 164 Carl Road, on Oct. 6 from 8 a.m. to noon. Call 408.730.7262 for more information.

    Local businesses recognized

Sunnyvale-based businesses Yahoo!, Applied Materials and Verity were all honored with plaques by the city at the Sept. 25 council meeting. All three companies had made contributions to the Sept. 11 relief efforts.

"We are going through some difficult times right now," said Bruce Paynter of Applied Materials. "However, our commitment to the community is as strong as ever."
