Safety Fair
Sunnyvale residents are invited to the second annual Community Safety Fair and old-fashioned pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon on Oct. 14, at Fire Station No. 2 on the corner of Wolfe Road and Arques Avenue. A breakfast of two large pancakes, two sausages, juice and coffee, will be served from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. for $3 for adults and $2 for children. Public Safety officers, city staff and community partners are hosting the fair that will include a variety of safety-oriented booths, tours of station No. 2's new training tower, and the arrival of a LifeFlight helicopter. The Department of Public Safety's emergency vehicles will be on display. All proceeds go to the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation. For more information, call 408.730.7216.
Teacher of the Year
Sunnyvale Middle School teacher David Bohrman was recognized as one of the Teachers of the Year in Santa Clara County at the 30th annual Teacher Recognition Day awards ceremony on Sept. 25. Twenty-eight teachers were selected by their school districts for the top countywide award given to individual classroom teachers. Teachers were selected by their districts to be honored for their ability to communicate subject matter in an interesting and effective manner, use creative methods in classroom instruction, continually upgrade and update their own education through training, participate in activities within the profession, and show a sincere commitment to be a champion for students, schools and community.
Sunnyvale Theater
The Sunnyvale Community Players are now performing The Wizard of Oz at the Sunnyvale Community Center Performing Arts Theater. The show, which opened on Sept. 8 and runs through Oct. 1, can be seen Thursdays, at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, at 8 p.m. and Sundays, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available through the box office for $16 for adults, $13 for students and seniors, and on Thursday nights for $11. Fall Book Sale
The Friends of the Sunnyvale Public Library will hold their fall book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 30, at the Raynor Community Center in Sunnyvale. The sale is open to Friends members at 9 a.m., and bargain bag hours will be from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Anyone wishing to become a Friend, or renew a membership, may do so at the sale. Representatives Wanted
World Heritage, a nonprofit student exchange program, is seeking local representatives to provide high school students from several countries including Germany, France, Spain, Japan and the former Soviet Union countries, with local program support. Community representatives plan an annual orientation, meet with the local high schools, provide support counseling for participants, screen potential host families and visit with the exchange students on a monthly basis. Representatives spend an average of one to two hours a week with the exchange students. The ideal candidates should enjoy fostering new international friendships, be community-minded and enjoy working with teenagers. Sunnyvale Gymnastics Club
The Sunnyvale Gymnastics Club's "Flip Into Fall" meet will be held Oct. 7. It is an invitational meet with girls from seven clubs in the Bay Area attending. There will be two sessions, with 100 level five and level six competitors. A raffle for prizes will be held. Elks Lodge Donation
The Sunnyvale Elks Lodge contributed all the food and barbecue crew for the Menlo Park Veterans Hospital annual family day on June 24. Over 250 dinners for patients and their families were served. The barbecue crew included 'Sarge' and Pat Sargent, Jerry Barnhardt, Nilo and Mannie Alvarado, Pat Thomas, Mary Hall, Milton 'Doc' Bassett, Stan Elliot, Tom Tomilinson and Bob Moffet.
Toastmasters
The Oct. 5 Orbiters Toastmasters Meeting will feature Gary I. Weiner, speaking on the topic, "Take Charge of Your Money."
