The best of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League took a little run through the park in Santa Clara last week with the annual running of the Central Park Invitational.

Eric Fontes of Fremont finished among the best with a place in the top 20 in the boys division. Fontes continued his outstanding senior season for the Firebirds by finishing 13th in 12:35 on the 2.3-mile course.

Fontes starred for the Firebirds with his 13th-place finish. Manuel Hernandez was 32nd for Fremont with John Seo 45th and Vince Klumper 46th.

Fremont's Elaheh Sajadi finished 39th in 16:29 in the girls' race.

Austin Sardella romped to a third-place finish in 13:15 to lead Fremont to a team second in the boys frosh-soph division. Casey McCleary ended up fifth for the Firebirds with Randell Polgar ninth, Trevor Fontes 31st and Chris Miguel 33rd.

In the girls junior varsity division, Kassy Korobkova ended up 50th overall in 18:16 for Fremont.

Brian McDonough raced to an individual title for Cupertino in the boys junior varsity division. The sophomore covered the course in 13:42 for the win, leading 'Tino to a team fourth. Alan Rowl was 17th for the Pioneers.

Tony Nguyen led the Fremont effort, finishing 38th in 15:17.

    Knights ready to run

The cross country teams at the King's Academy are ready to run this fall, says Knights coach Michelle Brown.

"This is the first year the King's Academy has had full teams for both men and women," said Brown. "Most of the women are returning runners, so their standings should improve dramatically over last year."

Senior Rosie Grantham is back for her fourth year on the King's squad, and the team captain is the top runner for the Knights.

Senior Natasha Chatilo, juniors Tiffany Massey and Parini Shroff, sophomore Abril Castillo and freshman Brittney McMillin round out the King's squad.

"I expect we will place at least fourth in our league this year," said Brown of the King's girls team. "Our men are mostly first year runners."

Freshman Larry Witkovski is a top prospect on the boys varsity along with junior David Gullans.

Seniors Ethan Clansky and Dan London, juniors Nathan Srameck and Ezra Pierce and freshmen Steve Parker, Tyson Kornely and Colin Blalock are other members of the King's varsity.

    Firebirds, Mustangs fall

Both Fremont and Homestead lost in football action last week.

The Firebirds dropped a 20-8 Thursday night decision to Gunn in the El Camino Division opener for each club. Fremont, now 0-4 for the year, will try to get on the winning track this week when the Firebirds visit Los Altos on Oct. 6, 3:15 p.m.

Homestead's record was evened at 2-2 for the year when the Mustangs lost their De Anza Division opener 50-0 to powerful Milpitas.

The Mustangs will go after their first win of the league campaign when they host Saratoga on Oct. 6, 6:30 p.m., at Fremont.

    Fair exchange

The Fremont girls tennis team is off to a winning start in the 2000 season, thanks to a couple of pretty fair players in the top two singles spots--foreign exchange students Marlo Koehler and Alisabeth Enghofer of Germany.

Koehler rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles and Enghofer won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles to lead the Firebirds to a 6-1 win over Mountain View last week.

Susanna Ho supported with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles, Thuy Tran and Linda Nguyen won 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 1 doubles, Yeran Yi and Angie Warriner won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles and Crystal Pangilinan and Wendy Su won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.

The Firebirds improved to 3-2 in El Camino Division play with the win. They are 3-3 for the year.

    Glass leads Firebirds

Robin Glass pounded down nine kills to lead the Fremont girls volleyball team to a 15-4, 16-14, 15-7 win over Milpitas in El Camino Division play last week.

The win helped the Firebirds improve to 2-1 in the league season.

Fremont was coming off of a 15-6, 15-12 loss to the King's Academy in the Silver Division finals of the King's Academy Invitational.

In other local action last week, Adrienne Hoopes nailed 16 kills to lead Homestead to a 15-7, 14-16, 15-3, 15-2 win over Wilcox. The win helped the Mustangs even their record at 2-2 in the El Camino Division.
