Man drives truck through local bar

The business day took a bizarre turn at Patio Bar on El Camino Real near Wolfe Road on Sept. 27 at 6:44 p.m. when a drunken driver rammed his 1972 GMC van into the front of the bar. Things got even more bizarre when he backed up and took another shot at the same wall. Things became potentially deadly when he backed up a third time and plowed through the front door, pinning two customers to the bar.

Two patrons pulled the driver out of the vehicle that, although almost completely destroyed, was still running. As Sunnyvale police and fire responded to the scene, they attempted to extricate the two trapped victims. When public safety officers attempted to shut off the engine, it unexpectedly reversed, running over a firefighter and speeding across three lanes of El Camino before stopping on the median.

The two patrons, a married couple from Sunnyvale, were taken to El Camino Hospital. The husband was treated for multiple lacerations and released. The wife was admitted with a concussion and multiple rib fractures. The firefighter, also taken to the hospital, was treated for pain and numbness, then released. The driver, Carl William Fultz of San Jose, was arrested and charged with one count of felony drunk driving. After being treated for multiple lacerations, he was booked at the county jail. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
