Monta Vista High hosts 1,500 student leaders
Fifteen hundred student leaders from all over Northern California will travel by school bus to Monta Vista High Oct. 13 to participate in a full day of leadership training sponsored by the California Association of Directors of Activities. The conference will feature two separate strands for high school and middle school student leaders, with all attendees gathered together at lunch time.
Participants will hear two keynote speakers: Madeline Manning Mims is a four-time Olympic track and field medalist and was named outstanding Young Woman of America in 1981; Richard Santana, who was a member of one of the largest gangs in California, left gangs and turned his life around by graduating with a masters from Harvard University.
Students had the opportunity to sign up for 29 workshops featuring such topics as "Dancing with Diversity to Facilitate Leadership." All workshops are presented by experienced school activity directors from throughout California and Hawaii.
A special feature of this conference will be the "Difference Making Opportunity" presented by Mike Smith. All middle school and all high school leaders will meet together for 90 minutes in the gym and break into small groups of 10 for interactive and team-building activities. Each set of students within these groups will then work together to create a special gift that will be given to local hospitals for childrens' wards meal trays. The groups will be facilitated by over 100 Link Crew leaders from Monta Vista High.
Along with the 1,500 student leaders will be more than 100 activity directors and advisers. For further information, please contact Joanne Laird, Assistant Principal at Monta Vista High School at 366-7603 or via e-mail at: jlaird@fuhsd.org.
