Mayor Kawczynski hurt in car crash

By Natasha Collins

Mayor Stan Kawczynski was unable to attend the Sept. 30 council meeting because he was at home recuperating from an accident he was in earlier that afternoon.

Kawczynski was driving on Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road, approximately 500 feet north of Homestead Road, when he was involved in a three-car crash, according to Capt. Steve Pigott of the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.

A woman's car stalled in the slow lane of traffic, blocking the lane and forcing traffic to stop. The woman had gotten out of her car, and another car had stopped to assist her.

While Kawczynski was stopped behind a row of cars, he was rear-ended and pushed into the car in front of him.

"It was just your normal accident," Kawczynski said. "He just failed to stop, and I tapped the car in front of me. I guess the guy wasn't paying attention and didn't see me stop."

Kawczynski was taken to the hospital because he had pain in his neck, back, shoulders, head, kneecaps and cheekbones.

"I am still trying to figure out how I hurt my cheekbones," he said.

He has been placed under observation to make sure there are no serious injuries to his head and neck. He has been put on pain medication and told to take it easy for a few days. He therefore was forced to miss the council meeting and to cancel several public-speaking engagements.

Kawczynski said he expected to return to work this week.

"I am alive, but not fine," he said. "Hopefully, this won't affect me for too long."

The man who hit Kawczynski was also taken to the hospital to be treated for pain in his chest, knees and neck. He was released later that day.
