So whose home game is it anyway?

When the Fremont and Homestead football teams collide this week for a game in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, the game will be played at Fremont's Diesner Field.

But both the Firebirds and Mustangs call Diesner home. So while one team will line up on the visitor's side of the football field, neither team will have to hit the road for the 7:30 p.m. game Friday.

Still, opposing coaches Charlie Bostic of Homestead and Ron Demonner of Fremont are more concerned with how things wind up this Friday than they are with where their players will line up. Whether their score is listed under home or visitor on the Diesner scoreboard doesn't matter ... as long as their score is higher at the game's end.

Homestead enters the game with a 1-1 league record after rolling to 32-0 win over Los Altos last week. And the Mustangs need a win to keep up with Cupertino in the division.

Fremont is also off to a 1-1 start after a tough 17-12 loss to Mountain View last week. Fremont, too, needs a win to keep pace in the division.

Senior quarterback Brandon Dougherty tossed a couple of touchdown passes to Garren Strong to lead Homestead to the convincing win over the Eagles last week.

Senior running back Steve Nichols gave the Mustangs the early lead with a 43-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and Dougherty hit Strong with a 41-yard TD toss to up the count to 14-0 before the end of the period. David Johnson converted after each score.

Brad McGee got in on the scoring act in the second quarter when he ran 15 yards for a touchdown, and Brian Maihack upped the score to 26-0 by the half when he picked off a pass and rambled 50 yards to the end zone.

The Mustangs closed out the scoring with an insurance touchdown in the fourth when Dougherty tossed 52 yards to Strong for a score.

A blocked punt turned out to be the difference for Fremont in their 17-12 loss to Mountain View on Friday.

The Spartans blocked a punt and ran it in for a score in the first quarter, and the Firebirds found themselves playing catch-up all day.

Senior quarterback Delainy Durgin pitched a 52-yard touchdown pass to Jessie Enchill to cut the lead to 7-6, but the Spartans kicked a field goal in the second to lead 10-6 at the half.

Mountain View scored in the third to lead 17-6, but Fremont came fighting back, this time on a 39-yard touchdown pass from Kenneth Mills to Mike Mattman.

But that was as close as the Firebirds could get.

    Girls Volleyball

Homestead pushed its league record to 5-1 in league play with an impressive win over Milpitas in girls volleyball action in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL last week.

The Mustangs had taken a 4-0 league mark into the week, but lost 15-9, 11-15, 15-12, 15-12 to Gunn, despite getting 15 kills from Adrianne Hoopes.

But Hoopes came back with 14 kills two days later to lead the Mustangs past Milpitas 14-16, 15-11, 15-9, 15-13.

The split left the Mustangs 5-1 in league play and 8-5 for the year. Homestead shares first place in the division with Gunn. The Titans are also 5-1 after beating Cupertino late last week.

Fremont slipped to 0-5 in the El Camino Division with back-to-back losses to Gunn and Cupertino.

The Firebirds lost 15-5, 15-5, 15-4 to the Titans and fell 15-10, 15-8, 15-12 to the Pioneers.

Fremont features a junior-laden lineup this fall, with just three seniors on the varsity. Outside hitters Ashley Elisary, Kirby Miguel and Tiana Stroughter are the only seniors on the 13-girl roster for the Firebirds.

The King's Academy, meanwhile, slipped to 4-3 in the Christian Private Schools League and to 12-7 overall after a 15-7, 15-10, 15-3 loss to Woodside Priory.

The Knights had opened the week by going five games for a hard-earned 15-6, 12-15, 15-13, 8-15, 15-9 win over Fremont Christian.
